Several years ago, we had a leak in an upstairs toilet that damaged the ceiling on our first floor. The drywall tape eventually stained and cracked, and when we remodeled our kitchen a few years later, I assumed the problem would finally be fixed.
Instead, the contractor painted over it with Kilz and told us it should do the trick.
At first, it looked fine. The ceiling was freshly painted, the stain was covered and everything blended in again. But the actual issue was still there underneath the surface. Over time, the crack slowly came back.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how similar this is to what happens with a lot of business websites.
On the surface, everything looks polished. Maybe you’ve added some new photos, updated your logo or featured a few good reviews. Underneath, however, the problems still exist.
The structure never improved. The messaging is still unclear. Service pages are either thin or missing entirely. Often, the site still isn’t set up to support search visibility or lead generation.
So while the website may look fresh, it doesn’t necessarily perform any differently. The crack is still there.
This happens to a lot of websites. The design gets refreshed, updates are made and things look better for a while. But if the underlying issues are never addressed, the cracks eventually reappear.
That’s the difference between a redesign and a true website remodel. One focuses on appearance. The other focuses on fixing what isn’t working.
Looking back, repairing the ceiling the right way the first time would have taken a little more effort. But it also would have addressed the actual problem instead of covering it up.
Websites are no different.
Sometimes a business doesn’t need another refresh or a few cosmetic fixes. Sometimes it needs a clearer understanding of what’s actually working, what isn’t and what changes would make the biggest impact.
If you’re not sure where your own website stands, I put together a simple Website Remodel Scorecard to help identify a few common problem areas. And if you want a more detailed review, my Website Clarity + Optimization Package goes a step further by identifying and fixing high-impact website and visibility issues while providing a simple 90-day roadmap for continued improvement.
The crack in our ceiling is still there. Now we just get to repair it twice.
